Meet The Team
Jennifer Childs (she/her) (Creator/Perfomer/Director): Jennifer Childs is the Producing Artistic Director for 1812 Productions. For 1812 she has created over 25 original works of theater including The Carols, To the Moon, It's My Party: The Women and Comedy Project, and the annual political humor show This Is The Week That Is. Her solo shows, Why I'm Scared of Dance and I Will Not Go Gently have been performed across the country. She's been playing Patsy for fifteen years and is grateful to Jilline for gifting her the South Philly accent. Love to Scott and Lily.
Scott Greer (he/him) (Creator/Performer): Scott is a 28-year veteran of Philadelphia theatre and has worked for 1812, the Arden, Walnut, InterAct, PTC, Wilma, People’s Light, Theatre Exile, Lantern Theater, Act II, and many more. Regionally, he has worked for Actors Theatre of Louisville, Round House, Cape May Stage, and the Pearl Theatre in New York. He has won six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre including the prestigious F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Theatre Artist. He was named “Best Theatre Talent” by Philadelphia Magazine. Love to Jen and Lily.
Melanie Cotton (she/her) (Choreographer): Melanie is an experienced choreographer, dancer, educator and theater artist. Melanie’s performance and creative practice integrates various forms into her work: clown, musical theater, improvisation, voguing, waacking, performative protest and stepping. Her work as a choreographer and theater artist is uniquely alive with the ingenuity of Hip-Hop culture. From 2004 to 2008 she worked as a principal dancer and contributing choreographer for all female Hip-Hop dance company Montazh PAC. From 2009 until 2014 she was a principal dancer and teaching artist for Rennie Harris: Puremovement dance theater company. Melanie’s performance credits include Bill Irwin’s The Happiness Lecture, 1812 Productions' It’s My Party: The Women in Comedy Project, Walnut Street Theater’s In The Heights, Mash Up Body with Kate Watson-Wallace, Pig Iron’s The Swamp is On, Allan Kaprow’s ‘Chicken’ Reinvented by Alex Da Corte and most recently 1812 Productions' The Way I Walk. Choreographer credits include Red 40’s The Best Songs in the World, The Arden Theatre’s production of The Legend of Georgia McBride, Lightning Rod Special's The Appointment and The Bearded Ladies Cabaret Love Notes: A year of no regrets.
Maria Shaplin (she/her) (Lighting Designer): Maria is a Philadelphia-based lighting designer who received her MFA from Temple University. She has a BA in Anthropology and Sociology from Hampshire College. Maria designs for many Philadelphia-based companies including: Applied Mechanics, The Riot Group, Swim Pony Performing Arts, InterAct, The Arden, The Wilma, New Paradise Laboratories, The Berserker Residents, and 1812. Maria is the co-founder of Applied Mechanics, a company who devises immersive, multi-narrative performance art. Maria is the recipient of a 2019 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. www.mariashaplin.com
Leigh Paradise (she/her/hers) (Costume Designer): A graduate of The College of William and Mary, Leigh followed a wandering career path that eventually led her to People’s Light in Malvern, PA, where she has been the cutter/draper since 2014. Recent design credits include The Way I Walk here at 1812, and Molly Sweeney (Lantern Theater Company). Her hobbies include hoarding yarn and matching patterns for fun. She lives in southeastern PA with her husband, their son, and an ever-evolving set of long-term critter companions.
Lance Kniskern (he/him) (Scenic & Properties Designer/ Technical Director): Lance is a freelance set designer in the Philadelphia Area and is now in his fifth season as Technical Director with 1812 Productions. Design highlights with 1812: The Roommate, Intimate Exchanges, Shoplifters, The Carols, Happy Birthday, and Broken Biscuits. Other design credits: The Last Match, Heir Apparent, The Tempest, The Gospel According To..., and Taming of The Shrew (2015 Barrymore Award Nomination for Best Set Design) with The Lantern Theater; The Merry Wives of Windsor, with Delaware Shakespeare; ; A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play and Spamalot with Resident Theater Company; Godspell with Drexel University; Two Gentlemen of Verona with Shakespeare in Clark Park; Hairspray: The Musical (Broadway World’s Best Set Design in Philadelphia 2012) with Media Theatre. Christopher Colucci (he/him) (Sound Designer/Music Director/Original Music): Pre-pandemic regional theater sound design collaborations include: 1812 Productions, Wilma Theater, Philadelphia Theater Company, Arden Theater, People's Light, Walnut Street Theatre, Azuka, InterAct, Inis Nua, Gulfshore Playhouse, Milwaukee Rep, Portland Stage, Weston Playhouse, and the National Constitution Center. Christopher recently attended the International Freedom Theater Festival in Narva, Estonia. 2016 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. Elliot Konstant (he/him) (Master Electrician): Happy to be returning to 1812 after the pandemic hiatus, Elliot's other recent credits include: Lighting Designer for Theatre Horizon's The Agitators (2020), Light Board Programmer at Bristol Riverside Theatre, Lighting Supervisor with Pig Iron Theatre Company, and Resident Master Electrician at Theatre Horizon.
Morgan Porter (she/her) (Wardrobe Mistress): Morgan is thrilled to stitch for 1812’s production of Two Outta Three! She holds a B.F.A. in Theatre Design/Technology from the University of South Dakota. After graduating in 2017, she moved to Philadelphia to apprentice at the Walnut Street Theatre. Since then, she has continued to freelance as a stitcher in the Philly area. Morgan holds 1812 close to her heart, and is thrilled for the return of live theater!
Ben Levan (he/him) (Production Manager): Ben is in his fifth season as the Production Manager for 1812 Productions. He is a Norristown native and WCUPA alum. Past PM credits include work with: Azuka Theatre, Orbiter 3, and Tiny Dynamite. Ben can also be spotted behind a lighting board as a freelance designer and recently as the resident lighting designer for The Living News at the National Constitution Center. Past credits include designs with: Azuka Theatre, Iron Age Theatre, and Team Sunshine Performance Corp. In addition to his production work Ben likes to write stories about the real world getting in the way of our digital lives. Other likes include: bicycling, cooking, and sunset strolls to the stage door.
Jorge Cousineau (he/him) (Cinematography and Editing): Jorge has worked on a number of 1812 productions including Hope & Gravity, I Will Not Go Gently, To The Moon, The Four Of Us, and almost all installments of This Is The Week That Is, including last year’s virtual edition. He used to design sets, lights, sound and video for dance and theater productions.
Bob Finkelstein (he/him) (Videographer): Bob Finkelstein is a Philadelphia-based freelance videographer. His work includes partnering with local artists and arts and educational organizations to document live events as well as to produce promotional videos about their work. He has also worked with a wide range of corporate clients creating footage to promote their services and unique work cultures. Prior to the field of videography, Bob worked in media relations for political candidates and as a journalist covering financial news, politics, and state government.
Thomas E. Shotkin (he/him) (Stage Manager): Tom is in his 20th (!) season as production stage manager at 1812. Favorite shows include: This Is The Week That Is (all of them), Our Show of Shows, To The Moon, The Four of Us, Bat Boy: The Musical, Recent Tragic Events, and An Evening Without Woody Allen (in which he performed). Other SM credits: People’s Light, Theatre Exile, Arden Theatre Company, Arena Stage (DC), Barnstormers Theatre (NH). Tom has also worked for PlayPenn, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Hartford Stage Company, Azuka Theatre, and Boarshead Theatre (MI). Tom lives with his partner, MB, and their furry companions Brody & Dex.
Julia Levis (they/them) (Assistant Stage Manager/COVID Safety Manager): Julia is a Philadelphia-based freelance theater artist and stage manager with a degree in Theater from Temple University. They have been with 1812 for the past four years and are thrilled to safely return to in-person shows. Much love to all the people who support their local artists!
