From The Director
When Jen asked me to direct This Is The Week That Is, I experienced that cartoon moment when your eyes bulge out of your head, circle clockwise, and then pop back in. It was a mixture of trepidation and excitement, which I have come to understand that anyone approaching this project will feel. I think the trepidation comes with the question, what are we going to talk about? And, after enduring these past two years, what are we NOT going to talk about? The world is going through war, climate change, inflation, and a freaking pandemic—how do we find the funny in all of this?! Being the director this year, it was important to me to get out of our heads and find the funny through improv. To crack open some pretty harsh realities, pull them apart, and amplify the absurdity of it all, so we could get to the point where we all share a laugh. This is where the exciting part came in.
At the beginning of the process, I thought long and hard about the message of the show, and the word community would always rise to the surface. During the pandemic and quarantine, we had to make monumental shifts as a society to keep a sense of community: how do we continue to create community in these chaotic times?
This show became our response. It is made by the people in the room and damn, did I have an amazing team this year. From the creative ensemble, to the production team to the crew, each person wholeheartedly came on board to answer these questions. I have such a deep admiration for the unique voices that created and strengthened the production.
Tonight we continue the search for community with you. The world right now is “insert your own adjective here,” so let’s share a laugh together.
—Tanaquil Márquez
