From The Producing Artistic Director

My favorite part of decorating the house for the holidays is putting the lights on the Christmas tree. No matter how tangled they get or how many times I poke my eye with a branch while winding them around the tree, once they are set and turned on, it instantly feels like the holidays. It feels like home.

For many years at 1812, our holiday tradition has been This Is The Week That Is. It is political humor, yes, but over the years it has become just as much a celebration of community. An opportunity to be with a group of people and laugh together. There is nothing like being in the room with you and hearing you laugh. It is that conversation between performer and audience, that comedic communion amongst a group of strangers sitting in a room together, that unique music of punchline-laugh or punchline-groan or punchline-silence that is different every night that keeps me onstage instead of online.

This year, as we dive back into a full season of live performance, we are doubling down on our comedy mission with productions that are incredibly theatrical, ridiculous, and outrageously funny. I’m honored to be here with Sean Close and Pax Ressler who have been a part of This Is The Week That Is for many years, Jackie Soro and Lexi Thammavong who made their This Is The Week debuts during our live return earlier this year, Brenson Thomas who stepped up to the plate for our digital production of This Is The Week in 2020, and Robyn Unger who is taking her first bow as part of an 1812 show with the production you’ll see today. Each of these incredible people is a bright light on our big comedy tree and, if we don’t poke your eye out, we hope to share some hearty laughs and holiday joy with you. Goodness knows we’ve earned it.

Thank you for joining us for This Is The Week That Is this year. I hope you all have a warm, wonderful, and laughter-filled holiday season.
