A Note from the Director

Welcome to The Carols!

Over the past twenty years, creating an original show for the holidays has become an 1812 tradition. Most years, the shows we create do not have much to do with the holidays, but this year I felt the need to take on Christmas.

I am one of three girls, and my Christmas Past is a blur of that early me with my sisters – the flannel feel of new matching nightgowns, unwrapping and putting out the crèche scene, cookie tins filled with Russian teacakes separated by layers of wax paper, sitting on the hard church pews on Christmas Eve and singing “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and long pre-Christmas morning discussions about what might be in the presents under the tree. That giddy, innocent childhood time with my sisters is one of the big inspirations for this play. We never lived through World War II but there were certainly times that we felt like the world was falling apart around us and all we had was each other and the inside jokes we shared. There are little bits of the Childs sisters in each of the Carol sisters.

My Christmas Present often involves performing or being at the theater so I have not spent the holidays with my sisters for over ten years. Instead, my husband, daughter and I spend Christmas day each year with 1812’s Stage Manager, Tom Shotkin (the inspiration for the character of Melvin Shaatz in this play), Tony Lawton (the actor who’s playing Melvin Shaatz in this play) and a changing cast of theater orphans who can’t get home for the holidays. We have our own traditions and inside jokes, which feel far away from the Christmases of my childhood, but just as vital.

What Christmas Yet to Come will bring is more frequently on my mind as I get older. But I will, like Scrooge, try to embrace the past, present, and future and “honor them in my heart”.

This is for my dear friends Tom Shotkin and Tony Lawton, and all those people who have gathered at our table for Christmas Present.

And this is for my sisters, Angie and Becky, and all the Christmases Past and Yet to Come that we have shared and will share. I miss them. That’s why I tell this story.
